TCM and Endometriosis: A Holistic Approach

TCM and Endometriosis: A Holistic Approach

Endometriosis is more than “bad period pain.” It is a complex, often chronic condition that deserves expert medical care, clear information and serious compassion. Diagnosis and treatment may involve a GP, gynaecologist, pelvic-health physiotherapist, pain specialist and fertility team. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can sit alongside this care as a complementary approach to supporting wellbeing—it should never delay assessment of significant pelvic pain or replace recommended treatment.

The TCM view: patterns, not promises

TCM practitioners assess the person, not only the diagnosis. In traditional terms, painful, fixed or stabbing pain may lead a practitioner to consider a pattern of Blood stasis; pain that shifts with stress may invite a different focus. Cold sensations, clotting, bowel symptoms, fatigue, sleep and emotional load all shape the picture.

These terms are part of TCM’s own framework and are not equivalent to the pathology of endometriosis. That distinction matters: TCM can offer supportive care, but it does not claim to remove lesions or cure the condition.

A collaborative treatment plan

An individual plan may include acupuncture, gentle lifestyle and food-therapy guidance, and (in some cases) Chinese herbs prescribed by a qualified professional. The practitioner should review medications, fertility treatment, anticoagulants, pregnancy status and planned surgery before recommending herbs or supplements.

Many of my patients also benefit from simple nervous-system support around flare days: a heat pack if it feels good, rest without guilt, hydration, nourishing cooked meals and a plan that reduces the pressure to push through pain. These are comfort strategies, not a substitute for clinical care.

When to seek urgent medical help

Seek urgent care for severe or sudden pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, fever, vomiting, pain during pregnancy, or symptoms that feel markedly different from your usual pattern. Keep your treating clinicians informed about any complementary therapies you use.

Questions worth asking our practice

We take pride in our integrative approach so don't hesitate to ask us to coordinate with your medical team, what outcomes are realistic, how they will assess progress, and when they would refer you back for medical review.
