Late-Summer Digestive Porridge | A TCM-Inspired Recipe

Late-Summer Digestive Porridge | A TCM-Inspired Recipe

Late summer has a particular kind of heaviness. The days are still bright, yet there is a subtle shift in the air and often in how we feel after weeks of salads, iced drinks, travel and irregular meals.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this is the season associated with the Earth element and with the Spleen and Stomach: the functional systems traditionally linked with transforming food into the nourishment and energy we use every day.

TCM is a whole system of traditional medicine, not a diagnosis tool. But its seasonal invitation is beautifully simple: return to warm, regular, easy-to-digest meals. This is where a bowl of porridge earns its place.

Why late summer is linked with the Spleen and Stomach in TCM

In TCM language, the Spleen and Stomach are not a one-to-one match for the organs described in Western medicine. They describe a network of functions involved in digestion, appetite, energy and the movement of fluids. When this system is supported, the traditional ideal is steady energy, comfortable digestion and a clear appetite. When it feels overburdened, a practitioner may speak of Dampness a traditional pattern sometimes associated with a sense of heaviness, puffiness, sluggishness or digestive discomfort.

Late summer is considered a natural moment to support this Earth-energy. The practical approach is less dramatic than a cleanse: choose cooked foods, eat at roughly consistent times, slow down enough to chew, and let your breakfast be warm rather than rushed.

A warming bowl built for the season

Sun for Soul DIGESTION BLEND is a plant-based porridge blend created for this ritual. It contains adzuki bean (hong dou 红豆), Chinese jujube (da zao 大枣), lotus seed (lian zi 莲子) and coix seed (yi ren 苡仁). The blend is designed to be enjoyed as porridge and is gluten-free.

This recipe brings it together with millet, pear and a little warming spice—a gentle bridge between the brightness of summer and the grounding rhythm of autumn.

Late-Summer Pear & Millet Digestive Porridge

Serving: 2 generous bowls
Prep Time: soak overnight; 50–60 minutes cooking

Ingredients:

- 20 g Sun for Soul Digestion blend
- 3 cups water, for soaking
- 1/2 cup millet (or rolled oats)
- 2 cups unsweetened plant milk
- 1 small ripe pear, diced
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- Pinch of sea salt
- To serve: black sesame powder, chopped walnuts, goji berries or a spoonful of tahini

Method:

1. Soak the Digestion blend in the water overnight, or for about 8 hours.
2. Drain and rinse the soaked blend. Place it in a saucepan with the plant milk and bring to a gentle boil.
3. Add the millet, cinnamon and salt. Lower the heat and simmer, stirring now and then, until the grains and herbs are soft and the porridge is creamy—about 50 minutes. Add a splash more water or plant milk if needed.
4. Stir through half of the diced pear during the final 10 minutes. Spoon into bowls and finish with the remaining pear and your chosen toppings.
5. Eat warm, ideally sitting down and without multitasking.

A small ritual that matters

The most supportive food routine is usually the one you can repeat. Make a larger batch, reheat it gently for two or three mornings, and notice how you feel when your first meal is warm and unhurried. If you have ongoing bloating, pain, appetite changes or other symptoms, speak with a qualified healthcare professional; a TCM practitioner can also offer individual guidance.

Make your late-summer breakfast a grounding daily ritual.
