Daoism definition, the ancient philosophy behind Chinese Medicine

What is the Daoism definition?
3 main things you need to know

  • Daoism is an ancient philosophy and the chinese word Dao directly translates to "the way" or "the path, the route".

  • Tao Te Ching is the only written scripture documenting this Chinese philosophy by Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu (or Lao Zi) and dates back to 300 BC.

  • What's the difference between Dao or Tao? It's the same thing - Dao is the Pin Yin spelling and Tao is phonetic sounding.

So what are the major philosophies in life according to Tao Te Ching?

The 3 main doctrines of Tao Te Ching focuses on the following
  1. live with the Dao or the "way" and know that the universe already created pre-paved direction for your life path
  2. keep things natural and with Zi Ran and keep things as simple and natural as possible, which in turn preserves Mother Nature for centuries to come
  3. approach life with effortless action or Wu Wei encourages to embrace life as it comes - in all of its simple, spontaneous, and naturally occurring forms. This form of seamless action is summarized simply as, "The way never acts, yet nothing is left undone." Check out this cool video on The School of Life that explains the way this more more.

Why is Daoism the origin of Eastern Medicine and how does the modern ways of life dissociate from Daoism?

Lao Tzu wrote Tao Te Ching to ensure the passing on of ancient wisdom for modern times. And when it comes to health and illness, living with Dao or with 'the way' requires us to stay rooted in the 3 doctrines of Daoism. We need to find a natural state of flow and to embrace an effortless state that helps preserve the body for longevity greater vitality.

When we begin to see our bodies in the same light as we see nature - in the cycles, phases, and nature - we can be a mirror of the cosmos and take better care of not only ourselves, but of our surroundings. By seeing the natural phases and ways our body transforms is to stay connected to the larger cosmo that is the Source of our inner cosmo.

daoism daoism definition eastern medicine daoism beliefs doaism chinese medicine lao tzu tao te ching taochi lao ziTranslated for the modern human, it looks like this:

When you're feeling tired, taking an extra nap or sleeping in a bit longer. If you feel slightly ill, take the time to rest and recover instead of working against it.

When we stop listening to our bodies, we forget to preserve and care for the wealth of life that lives within - and when we begin to rely on chemicals or temporarily relief, it's like trying to patch the hole in our roof with cardboard boxes - what happens if a rainstorm comes?

The more we dissociate from the ways of nature and embracing nature within, the more we grow distant from the origin of and roots of tradition our ancestors built their communities and health practices upon, that ultimately enabled them to survive the evolutions in the first place.

How can we bring back natural healing to the body?

The goal of the entire ethos of traditional medicine healing is to bring about a way of life that continuously restores our natural flow (Qi energy), ensures yin-yang balance, and allows the body to practice Wu-wei and return to state of Zi Ran.

By incorporating the various modalities of TCM in our daily ways of life, we can begin to allow the body to naturally heal itself, and to experience a vital, strong, and abundant life.
